Lost my timeline file(s)

Help please

I've had a problem with my PC and now when opening my registered copy of Kith and Kin 3.2.1, receive the following "Unable to open Timeline tables in C:\KKPro3Data"

I've tried clicking 'View' and 'Options' to access the Timeline tables but to no avail. C:\KKPro3Data contains 60 files including dbisam.lck. My attempt to download a new 'set' of Timelines by following the instructions - right click and save etc - has not worked but I managed to save the txt file.

Also, when attempting to export (updated) Web pages, there does not seem to be an option to include a timeline of persons in the database - although I have done so in the past.

All advice / help gratefully accepted!

Regards
Peter

Oh yes, Firefox, Chrome and IE on Windows 7 Pro 64.

Hi,

The timeline files in C:\KKPro3Data are:
Timelines.dat
Timelines.idx
TLEvents.dat
TLEvents.idx

If these do not exist, please recover them from a backup of the C:\KKPro3Data folder or reinstall Kith and Kin Pro V3 to install the default timeline files.

Thanks as ever, Nick - all back up and running. Easy when you know how!

If I move the file from the C:\ drive to my D:\ drive (where K&K is located) how do I tell the programme that the file has moved?

Regards

Hi,
The location of the timeline files cannot be changed. They must be on the Windows drive (normally C:) and in \KKPro3Data.

Thank you for this Nick, that's a shame!

Hi Nick,
I'm thinking of moving my KKPro3Data sub-folders to C:\Users\[myname]\Documents. That's because I run Kith and Kin on a Windows 10 installation within a Fusion virtual machine on a Mac. The advantage of storing the Kith and Kin data in the Documents folder rather than the C drive root folder is that in a Fusion VM the Documents folder can be 'mirrored' on the host Mac computer while the root folder can't. The benefit of mirroring is that the Mac's Time Machine archiving system picks up mirrored files, ensuring that your Kith and Kin work is backed-up every hour on the Mac. (I have to exclude the VM from Time Machine backups because of the excessive load created by backing up a whole VM every hour.) However, I see you advise Kith and Kin users not to move their database away from the C: root folder - because of complications caused by Windows virtual libraries and permissions limitations, particularly where people move their databases into program areas. I also see that you need to keep the timeline files in the original position. However, Kith and Kin Pro and its timeline function do seem to work okay if you do the following: copy the KKPro3Data folder with all the sub-folders from the root area to the Documents area; retain the timeline files within the original root KKPro3Data folder, but delete the other sub-folders; and then re-direct Kith and Kin to the re-located active database within the Documents area. This complicates things a bit because you end up with folders called KKPro3Data in 2 locations. But is there any other reason not to do this? Many thanks for any advice you can give. Rob

Hi,
Storing your databases within the Documents folder should be fine. And as you say, the timeline files will have to remain in the C:\KKPro3Data folder.

Nick, Many thanks for the prompt answer. Hopefully the confirmation that you can store Kith and Kin Pro databases in your Documents folder will be helpful to anyone who backs up their Documents folder more frequently than their C drive root folder. Thanks again.

Apologies - but I need to correct a folder location I gave previously. This is for the benefit of anyone running Kith and Kin Pro on a Mac, via a VM Fusion virtual machine, who also wants to backup their family trees using Apple's Time Machine. Previously I gave the location where I intended to store my tree database sub-folders as C:\Users\[myname]\Documents. This was the wrong Documents folder - because I now realise that Fusion can't 'mirror' this folder. The correct Documents location for the KKPro3Data folder (ie the folder that stores the tree database sub-folders) is as follows: Network\vmware-host\Shared Folders\Documents\KKPro3Data. If you copy KKPro3Data to this location, Kith and Kin continues to work fine - and if this Documents folder is mirrored to your Mac, your Time Machine will automatically back up your tree databases every hour. As Nick Hunter confirmed, you do also need to retain a folder called KKPro3Data at This PC\Local Disk (C:)\KKPro3Data. This folder must contain the Timeline files:
Timelines.dat
Timelines.idx
TLEvents.dat
TLEvents.ibk
TLEvents.idx
If you don't retain these files in this location on the C drive, the Timeline function in Kith and Kin Pro will stop working.
