Layers again

I still have some problems with how best to use layers. I find them most useful in defining family groups, say from one parish or locality. That said, I don't like the inability to navigate outside the selected layer. For my purposes, it would be more useful if instead of defined layers, it were possible simply to colour-code the family rectangles so that the family groupings were apparent without the need to confine oneself to a layer.
