Deleting People and Families in Bulk

Post by Arthur494 » Sun Oct 10, 2010 12:20 pm

I inadvertently imported a GEDCOM file with 2638 people into my own tree. How do I get rid of these people (and their families) - preferably not one by one? They don't appear in the tree layout. I've got them identified in a SQL query but can't find a way of selecting them all or deleting them one by one?

Tool for bulk deleting of data

You might want to look at this tool:

Discussed in:

Here's a download link for the tool:
http://dienhart.com/software/Borland_Delphi/documentation/DDQM.shtml (broken link)

The tool described there will allow you to execute a DELETE statement using the same criteria as your SELECT statement. (But be sure to try it out on a copy of your database first.) If you want help with the delete query, just let me know.

Best,
John

I am intrigued that you can import 2638 people and their families and the families do no appear in the tree layout. People in limbo do not appear on the tree layout but any person linked to a family should be on the tree layout somewhere, or are all these people in limbo?

Hi,

You may have to create a new database exporting just the families and people that you do want to keep. Try "File | Database | Copy selection" and see if that helps.

I finally got round to trying your excellent ideas, and Nick's suggetsion worked first time. The tree was reduced from 13.8 to 4.45 MB.
thanks!
