Editing Data in Bulk

I have just found this feature in Help and it seems to be potentially very useful but my changes are not being saved. (I have edited several records and the I-bar indicator has moved).

I'm sorry I can't replicate it! I moved on to doing what I wanted in SQL and now can't remember the details.
