Hi John, I packed the database and retimed the query. It still took 30 seconds to find 22 people from 3023, with 100% CPU Usage for the whole 30 seconds. There is some disc activity but it is not continuous. Running it a second time still took 30 seconds. the people.dat & people.idx files are both a...

Hi all The new layers feature seemed to be a good idea in theory, but it has created questions as to how best to use it. As far as I can see every family has only one link to one layer, therefore cannot be on two layers. You can only select one layer or all layers. In an ideal world you would be abl...

Hi, I have just tried this with my database of over 3000 people and it did produce the same list as the Tools -> People in limbo feature. The result can also be used to directly select a person's edit window, that's just what I wanted, thanks. The Tools -> People feature produces the list as a text ...

Database backup changes
Hi all, You backup your database, by taking a copy, once a week or once a month. You then start to worry about what you have changed. You would like to go back to the old database for some of your data, but not it all. The following queries will show you which person & family records have changed. C...

Editing data in bulk
Hi all, The "Editing data in bulk" help page suggests a possible use for this feature but does not include an example. Here is the paragraph from the help page:- "For example, if you have added a new user-defined field to the people table, you may want to add the data for the new field for every per...

Notes with a Privacy Level of 66 from Families on Layer 2
Hi all, I wanted to search for all the Notes with a Privacy Level of 66 from Families, but restrict the search to Families on Layer 2. I don't use Privacy Level 66 for People Notes so the search does not check that it is only searching Family Notes. Here is the query :- --Notes with a Privacy Level ...

Hi Nick, I am experimenting with the layers feature and have come across a few features which, in addition to my previous comments, would make working with layers easier. Could the size of the "Manage Layers" window & the "Choose layer to make active" windows be made adjustable? I now have more laye...

Editing a Family or Person
Hi Nick, When editing a family or person I can right click on a text field to display a pull down list of previous entries. In V2 this list was lost when the program closed. The list is now maintained even when windows is closed. I believe this was a suggestion in the improvements requested for vers...

Hi Nick, This is probably getting too heavy into SQL but in your example does the first quote tell the search engine to treat the second quote as part of the search string? Two things I have realized in this query experiment are:- 1. Two single quotes together look exactly like a double quote in pro...

Searching for place & church dedication
Hi all, Searching for a particular church I found that the search engine will not accept the apostrophe character, as in St. Paul's. It will however accept the full stop after St. So how do you select only London, St. Paul's church from the list below:- London St. Paul London St Paul London St. Paul...

Database repair
Hi Nick, File -> database -> Repair does what it says on the tin, much less complicated than version 2, but it does not tell you what it has changed. If it finds a problem it will report that it has fixed the problem, but it leaves you worrying what it has changed. An error report would be helpful, ...

Records modified feature does not show date changed
Hi Nick, Tools -> Records modified creates a table with headings Code, Description & Date changed; but the date changed column is blank for all entries. You can sort by date changed and the list is redrawn in the correct order of date changed starting with the oldest date. Interestingly the help pag...

People in Limbo
Hi Nick, Tools -> People in limbo produces a text file listing the P number & name of people in limbo. This text editor file cannot be left open while editing any of the people listed. To use this information I have to copy the data to an external text editor, close the internal text editor, and the...
